These should be fresh in our memories. The 2014/15 season marked the first time Arsenal would be utilizing Puma as their kit makers instead of Nike since 1994, so naturally Puma had to come out with some dynamite stuff to prove their merit.
They nailed it.
Instead of getting creative with navy or whatever other colors that had been tested over the years, Puma stuck with that colors that had made Arsenal iconic: red with white sleeves.
Not only that, but the season marked their second FA Cup since breaking the trophy drought and ended with some of the most optimism that Arsenal have seen since the Invincible’s season. These kits will be remembered as the kits that represent the year that Arsenal turned the corner and became Premier League title contenders yet again.

The Gunners have quite the history. They were founded as Dial Square in 1886 in Woolwich by workers of the Royal Arsenal. They soon renamed themselves Royal Arsenal and then Woolwich Arsenal. The club would be fully introduced into the football league in 1893 in the second division. It took them eleven years to earn promotion in 1904. The first real success for Arsenal came under Herbert Chapman when he took over in 1924.

As far as Arsenal’s colors, they have just as much history as the team itself. The red originated from Nottingham Forest’s red when two former Forest players moved to Woolwish to find work. They brought the red with them and the rest is history.

The white sleeves that we’ve become so familiar with didn’t originate until Chapman wanted more distinct colors in 1933. This combination of bright red and white sleeves has been used in every Arsenal jersey with little exception.

But it’s not just the colors that make a kit memorable. Most of what makes the kits on the list noteworthy are what Arsenal did with the kit. Winning a trophy or two while wearing a certain shirt will endear you to those colors far more than any clever design ever will.

And so, without further ado, let’s get started with the top Arsenal home kits of all time.

Ah, the fresh allure of the 1978 kits. With their arms crossed, you may think that the Arsenal youth squad pictured here is just covering up the massive sponsor logo strewn across the front of the kit. But that’s not the case.

These refreshing kits were the last to not have an all-engulfing logo of a random sponsor across the front of the shirt. Instead, there appeared only umbro’s small logo and the infamous cannon emblem. Next to that it is just a sea of red.

Although the season did not exactly go the Gunner’s way, seeing as how they finished 7th in the table with Liverpool claiming their title, it would be the last time that the red would be unhindered like it had been since the kits first came to North London in 1886.

As if setting the trend for the years to come, one of Arsene Wenger’s first moves was to bring in Patrick Vieira, who would captain Arsenal to the Invincible 2003/4 season.

Arsene Wenger was absolutely revolutionary to Arsenal, solidifying “the Arsenal way” as a type of play that became a standard any time the Gunners hit the pitch.

While they only finished third, it became apparent that Arsene Wenger was going to take this club places.

The last kits that Nike would bring Arsenal featured a banded navy collar and banded sleeves the likes of which Arsenal had not seen since the Dreamcast jerseys of 2000 and while they were stylish and something new, it’s what they stand for and the transition that ensued that makes them memorable.

After a decade long trophy drought, Arsenal finally broke out with an FA Cup win that had them pitted against a Hull City squad that got off to a quick 2-0 lead. It took until the dying moments of extra time for the hero of the season, Aaron Ramsey, to put in the winner and get Arsenal off the trophy snide.

2006 was the first year that the Emirates Stadium was completed, kicking in a new era of Arsenal football. After a near century at Highbury, a 390 million pound stadium was erected to become the third largest stadium in England behind Wembley and Old Trafford.

Along with the stadium came new kits with the primary sponsor of Fly Emirates branded cross the front. This brand would become synonymous with Arsene Wenger and while this stadium plagued Arsenal’s pocket book for years, now that it’s all paid off we can look back and fondly remember what we had to suffer through to get the the Arsenal that we have today.

The 2006 season was still well within earshot of the Invincible year, but a new page had been turned and this new Arsenal is still coming to fruition today.

Jumping just one year back from the completion of the Fly Emirates partnership, the 2005 jerseys were one of only two kit’s since the introduction of the red/white sleeve combo not to use that combo. Instead, these kits were used to commemorate Arsenal’s time at Highbury and hearken back to the time when Arsenal’s every day shirts were this redcurrant.

Arsenal had been at Higbury since 1913 and it was sewn into a patch just above the sponsor logo. Much like the 2006/7 kits were signifying the opening of a new Arsenal chapter, these classic 2005/6 kits were signifying the closing of an Arsenal chapter, essentially one of the first Arsenal chapters.

With the building of the Emirates, Arsenal were acclimatizing to modern day football.

Kits are all about iconic, irreplaceable aspects that make it completely identifiable with the squad that coined it. The 1933 kits gave Arsenal one of their most iconic aspects, next to the red and the cannon – the white sleeves.

Under Herbert Chapman, Arsenal were ‘modernized’ into the beginnings of the Arsenal we see now. Chapman added players numbers to the backs of the shirts, he modernized training and he officially made the club name simply ‘Arsenal.’

Obviously all of these made a huge impact on Arsenal and the game in general, but Herbert Chapman also brought the white sleeves to distinguish the club.

Arsenal also won the league in 1933, the first of a three-peat that would include the next two years. Needless to say the sleeves were here to stay.

One problem with having the greatest season in Premier League history is that no matter what Arsenal list is construed, number one is always going to be the Invincibles.

The same is true here.

Arsenal’s most memorable kit, by association, are the kits worn in the 2003/4 season when the Gunners completed the first Invincible season of the century and the best Premier League season in history.

Led by Thierry Henry up front, Jans Lehmann in goal, Patrick Vieira as captain and a host of essentially perfect team players, the Gunners did what Arsene Wenger had predicted they would do the year before – go undefeated. When they did not, Arsene never lost faith. Lo and behold, they did it.

It is quite the feat to accomplish the impossible, but the 2003/4 Gunners managed to do it.
