Arsenal host Newcastle at the Emirates in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.
This has felt like a long week, hasn’t it? A full seven days on from Arsenal putting West Brom to the sword, football is back in the form of the best domestic cup competition in the world.
Back in July – which feels oh so long ago – it brought Arsenal and their supporters unbridled joy. Coming from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final was the highlight of the year. In that time there has been change aplenty.
The Premier League has not been a happy hunting ground for Mikel Arteta‘s side, and while a full corner has not been turned, Arsenal are now peeking around the other side.
More from Pain in the Arsenal
Ironically, this would have been a game to give the youngsters a few minutes. As it is, it’s probably a fixture where most of the old guard may garner a few minutes. By no means, however, should the FA Cup be discounted this season. It means a great deal to supporters, and could even be the Gunners’ most legitimate route back into Europe this season.
Sitting in a lowly 11th place in the top-flight, even with the upturn in form and the bizarre unpredictability of the division this year, we can’t get carried away and expect to suddenly finish in the top six. Not out of the question by any means, mind you.
In terms of the Europa League, there are some fierce opposition left in the competition, not least Benfica who await Arsenal in the round of 32.
Above all, this is a trophy that is Arsenal’s to defend. 14 titles is testament to the club’s ability to produce in knockout-style competition and evidence of its importance to the club.
Newcastle await in an all Premier League tie, and here is your preview of Saturday’s third round clash.

<h2>Arsenal Team News</h2>
<p>Injuries and absences are finally starting to even out for Arsenal, with the squad taking shape and slowly edging towards its healthiest possible state.</p>
<p>There have been departures since the last fixture, with both <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/07/arsenal-vs-newcastle-preview-prediction/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/12/31/arsenal-confirm-sead-kolasinac-loan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sead Kolasinac</a> and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/07/arsenal-vs-newcastle-preview-prediction/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/04/arsenal-william-saliba-nice-6-month-loan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">William Saliba</a> departing on six-month loan deals, and even by the time Saturday’s clash kicks off more could <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/07/arsenal-vs-newcastle-preview-prediction/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/12/31/arsenal-6-players-leave-gunners-january/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have made way</a>.</p>

<p>As for Gabriel, he’s been absent for the past three matches after contracting COVID-19, with the <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/07/arsenal-vs-newcastle-preview-prediction/"https://www.arsenal.com/news/team-news-latest-gabriel-and-partey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">club informing supporters</a> that he’s recovered well and is feeling no ill effects of the virus. Gabriel even posted on Twitter confirming he is back and available.</p>
<p>Apart from those two, Arsenal have a clean bill of health. It’s not often such pleasures are granted to this injury-cursed football club.</p>
<p>As for Newcastle, Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser are still unavailable, so too is Jamaal Lascelles, who remains a doubt as he recovers from the effects of COVID-19. The Magpies have Isaac Hayden back following a one-match suspension, while fringe players such as Paul Dummett and Dwight Gayle are likely to earn some minutes.</p>

<h2>Arsenal vs Newcastle Score Prediction</h2>
<p>FA Cup third round weekend is one of the best in the English football calendar. Of course, it’s immeasurably better when there are supporters filling the stands, not least for the lesser sides travelling to the ‘big boys’, but it’s still a time to savour.</p>
<p>Arsenal don’t have any minnows to face and instead have Premier League opposition in their way, a Newcastle side who simply don’t give a toss about a good cup run.</p>
<p>Steve Bruce and many managers before him have always fielded weakened sides in this competition, a viewpoint not shared by their supporters who want to see their side reach the latter stages.</p>

<p><script async src=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/07/arsenal-vs-newcastle-preview-prediction/"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p></div>
<p>Bruce will set his side up for a hit and run, break-us-down-if-you-can type approach, one Arsenal should be able to contend with. It’ll be a totally different side to the one who took on West Brom, one without <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/07/arsenal-vs-newcastle-preview-prediction/"https://fbref.com/en/players/bc7dc64d/Bukayo-Saka?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Bukayo Saka</a> or Emile Smith Rowe, but the firepower that come in should have enough to deal with the Magpies.</p>
<p>Set-pieces is where Newcastle may have most joy, but Arsenal have a very good record this season at defending them and a central defensive partnership of Chambers and Mari will help nullify that threat. Unless, that is, Cedric gets left to mark Andy Carroll…</p>
<p>It likely won’t be the most entertaining fixture of the round. The Gunners should absolutely take it seriously, mind you, and I believe that’ll see them through.</p>
