Let’s begin with the most obvious, shall we? It can be argued that Arsenal’s greatest enemy is in fact Arsenal. While injuries are of course an unavoidable aspect of athletics, Arsenal seem to constantly be racked with persistent and devastating injuries. Other teams just don’t seem to have this issue.
Look at Manchester City. Besides Sergio Aguero, the club seems to be made of iron men. Obviously they have had some issues this season, but the Citizens are often one of the most healthy teams in the league.
Look at Chelsea last year. Diego Costa may have had a spell on the sideline at a few points in the campaign, but the rest of the club was basically fit throughout. This season John Terry and Thibaut Courtois have missed major minutes-and for some reason they didn’t have a decent back up. Odd that. Eden Hazard may have picked up a knock against Leicester, but really I can’t recall even one of their midfield players missing major time last season.
The point I am trying to make is simple. You need health to claim the crown of the English top flight. Injuries have been an ongoing issue for the Gunners. For years. The acquisition of Shad Forsythe was supposed to alleviate this issue, and the American doctor has made an impact. Since Forsythe joined the club in July of 2014, Arsenal have suffered far less injuries. According to the Mirror, Arsenal players only missed a collective 1,834 days to injury in 2014/15 compared to the 2,472 in 2013/14. That is a huge improvement and Forsythe’s impact cannot be denied.
Before Wenger rides off into the sunset, he has to find a way to quell this constant injury issue. If he departs with these constant injuries still the norm, then the next manager after him will never have a fair chance to establish their own legacy.

10 Worst Signings Under Arsene Wenger

I’m not saying that Arsenal are falling apart, far from it. However there are some issues that could cause a great deal of anguish on the horizon. We all know how long it’s been since Arsenal have won the league, but that drought could come to an end as soon as next May. No, there are some problems with the club that could cause ripple effects for the foreseeable future.

Arsene Wenger is like a magician. He was able to coax some extremely sub-par Arsenal sides through the arduous test that is the Premiership, time after time. He had to sell some of his best players to balance the books, while simultaneously keeping supporters happy. The man knows how to walk the line. But his time at Arsenal is coming to an end, and before he leaves there are some loose ends he will need to straighten out, lest he go the way of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Here are five things that must weigh heavily on Arsene Wenger’s mind, for both the short and long term of the club.

4. Everybody Wants To Play

Pretty soon Arsenal will have to get ready to bid farewell to Mathieu Debuchy. It is unfortunate in my opinion. I still remember those first few games he started at right back. I thought he was an absolute menace on the right hand side. Tough, strong and not afraid to push forward, Debuchy looked like the perfect replacement for his countryman Bacaray Sagna.

Then came Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic and his ridiculously unnecessary push, which set the Debuchy careening into a disastrous stint on the treatment table. It wasn’t all bad. For Arsenal at least. In his absence Hector Bellerin shot off like a rocket, grabbing the opportunity with both hands and becoming one of the best right backs in England.

Debuchy has made it perfectly clear that he needs playing time if there is any chance for him to break into the French national team for the Euros next year. You have to feel for the guy. He was his country’s first choice right back until a slew of injuries got him sidelined and unable to defend his position. You can’t blame Wenger or Bellerin, but Debuchy was given a hard pill to swallow. At 30-years-old, this is the prime of Debuchy’s footballing years. He will never get this back. There is no three or four years down the road for him. This is the chance to play on a huge stage in his home country, and yet his place has been usurped by a devilishly coiffed Spaniard who is ten years his junior. Rough.

Then there is David Ospina. I remember the good old days when Ospina made Wojciech Szczęsny look incredibly pedestrian. Now, however, Ospina has fallen out of the hearts and minds of the Arsenal faithful. His gaffes in the Champions League have relegated him to a deep, deep position behind first choice stopper Petr Cech. As the number one goalkeeper for Colombia and the number one keeper at all of his former clubs, I can’t envisage Ospina wanting to stay on as an understudy much longer.

This must be difficult for Arsene Wenger. Supporters constantly call for more support and greater quality in the side, yet when the manager does acquire it, these players grow restless. The FA Cup would be the perfect place for these two players to really strut their stuff, but the competition is set to commence after the January transfer window. That may be enough time for Ospina, who might be unsettled but isn’t in a rush to leave yet. Besides, Cech will be in goal for at least the next two or three seasons, so Wenger has time to sort out that issue.

Debuchy on the other hand looks set to force a move, which is unfortunate considering that since his injury Hector Bellerin has not been his usual self. Now I’m not saying that Bellerin is rubbish, far from it. But giving the young Spaniard some time to rest and collect himself would probably be good for him. Also its important not to crown Bellerin as the first choice right back just yet, he’s only twenty and he needs to remain hungry. He really has only been playing well for one calendar year.

Alas, with Carl Jenkinson not truly impressing at West Ham, Arsenal may have another positional quandary on their hands. Of course, we do have Calum Chambers, and he is apparently our answer to everything at this point. We need a right back? Hey there Calum, off you go son. Oh what’s this, short at center back? Go on now Chambo, get stuck in. What? Coquelin’s injured! Come now Calum we know you were meant to be holding midfielder all along. He’s a good lad that Calum Chabers. I’m sure he could back up Cech too, forget I even brought this up. We’ll be fine.

3. Our Dear Spanish Friends, Barcelona

Did anyone really have any doubt about who we would face in the Round of 16? Different cast same shirt, Barcelona and Arsenal do battle once again. After all of the pain, suffering and anguish we put ourselves through to get to this point, the football gods rewarded us with Neymar, Messi and my personal favorite, Suarez.

I am in the camp – small as it may be – that we can actually get a result against Barca. We never had Ozil or Sanchez when we faced them before. I mean we did have Henry, Pires and Fabregas in the 2006 final, but that’s beside the point. If we strengthen in January, I believe Arsenal can cause an upset. Its unlikely. Highly unlikely. I mean we have the slimmest of chances and even then its still probably not going to happen. Yet I maintain hope.

Because that’s what the Champions League is about. We have two games. We stole one against Bayern. Why not one against Barcelona as well? After that we can steal a page out of Chelsea’s book and park the bus so deep in our own half you’ll see tire marks in the penalty box.

However a result against Barcelona isn’t just important for the present. Its something that Arsenal need in order to grow. Make no mistake, Arsenal is a huge club, and a massive European power. Yet, Arsenal seem to be stagnating in the Champions League. If we are going to have any shot against Messi and Co., we will need our best players to dig deep, and the manager to dig deep into the club’s coffers.

If Arsenal fail to make at least a genuine competition out of this tie then the dominoes may begin to fall. Which brings me to my next topic.

2. Arsenal’s Elite Must Remain

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are our best players. Behind them, Laurent Koscielny, Olivier Giroud, Santi Carzola and Aaron Ramsey are very important as well. However the first two players are undoubtedly world class. <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/16/5-things-on-arsene-wengers-mind/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/15/arsenal-rumors-mesut-ozil-alexis-sanchez-nacho-monreal-at-risk/" target="_blank">There is a lot of chirping going on about Real Madrid and Manchester City looking to lure away our golden boys.
Arsenal need to make real pushes toward major silverware. In order to keep our best players, the Gunners have to be serious contenders. A tie against Barcelona can’t just be a “let’s give it the old college try” moment. We have to be serious about our endeavors.

Perhaps the Champions League may be a bit out of our reach this season, but the Premier League is most certainly not. Chelsea is a dumpster fire smoldering one point away from the relegation zone: truth. Manchester United are so toothless, I hear that they only have apple sauce available in the Old Trafford dressing room: yikes. After starting brightly, Liverpool’s Klopp-mania seems to be coming back down to Earth: meh. Manchester City spent a mountain of money for big names and fancy shirts with collars: whatever.

Then there’s Leicester. I have to admit I enjoy watching them play. I hate to be that guy, but sheesh they are fun. Our 5-2 thrashing of the Foxes on the road looks more and more like a masterclass with every passing week. I believe that if they can stay afloat throughout the festive period, and if the Gunners can defeat Manchester City on Monday, then it will end up being a sprint between the two clubs.

Arsenal need to grab this year’s title in order to prove to players like Sanchez and Ozil that North London is where they will cement their legacies. I believe Ozil is locked in for the long haul. He is becoming the face of the club since taking over from Cesc Fabregas. Also if he goes on to shatter Thierry Henry’s assist record, I believe he will already be on his way to Arsenal legend status.

It’s Alexis who we need to convince. He is so hungry for success I worry that he may get fed up with another season off the top spot. Going up against his former team in Barcelona will definitely light a fire under the Chilean. Let us hope that it ignites Arsenal’s glory and not his impatience.

1. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The Ox came into this year’s campaign as the golden Gunner. Many of his teammates had <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/16/5-things-on-arsene-wengers-mind/2/"http://metro.co.uk/2015/08/05/arsenal-players-pick-alex-oxlade-chamberlain-as-likely-player-of-the-season-winner-5328701/" target="_blank">selected Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the player who would have a breakout season. Unfortunately that has not come to fruition. In many ways the Ox has regressed in his development. He seems unsure of himself and rather unsettled on the pitch. With the host of injury problems at the club, one would assume that Oxlade- Chamberlain would be the player to really take advantage. Somehow he has managed to look miles off the pace.

That is very worrying if you are a Gooner and downright terrifying if you are Arsene Wenger. I don’t believe that Wenger truly trusts Joel Campbell. The Costa Rican is making great strides in the first team, but I still get the suspicion that the manager is just looking for a chance to pull him off the pitch.

The Ox embodies the future of the club. He needs to sort out his hindrances so that he can reach his full potential. If Arsenal are going to succeed in the next 4-5 years the Ox will be a huge part of that. His goal in the Community Shield has been Alex’s only bright spot in a season full of question marks and headaches.
