Arsenal looks to end Aston Villa’s hopes of avoiding relegation as they fight for their own progress. Here are five key players in the match.
In case you haven’t heard, Arsenal has put together two straight matches that were the token underdog victories. A victory over Liverpool in which the Red mustered eight times the number of shots that the Gunners did, and a victory over Manchester City in which tremendous and resolute defending secured a clean sheet and a berth in the FA Cup final.
It’s all built a good deal of belief at the Emirates that was cast into such doubt after the depressing loss to Tottenham just prior—a loss that ended what hopes we had of qualifying for a Europa League berth.
All that aside, Aston Villa are next up. Villa sits just three points away from escaping the relegation zone (at least for now), and with it being Watford that they hope to trade places with, and Watford who face the Gunners in the final week of the season, Villa have a very clear path to safety.
But clarity doesn’t always mean easy, and getting through an inspired Arsenal side will be far from easy. Especially if these five key men do their parts as they’ve been doing so often lately.
Let’s dig into our five key players, starting with No. 5.
5. David Luiz
It wasn’t all that long ago that I was picking a centerback and putting him on this list because “someone has to do the job.” My logic was that whoever could screw up the least would be the key man in protecting the goal.
That’s different now. David Luiz put forth a sparkling effort against City and this is a man who runs on confidence. The fact that he held it all together against a potent attack like City’s makes me 100% confident in his ability to do the same against Villa.
That said, it’s a different kind of defending. It’s going to be defending in space, defending counterattacking, and moving. That can sometimes bite Luiz in the arse, but if he can hold up his defensive role here, we can feel confident in a clean sheet.
No. 4 next.

5. David Luiz

4. Bukayo Saka

I feel a little like a spoiled child when I say this, but it’s been too long since we’ve seen <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-5-key-players/"https://fbref.com/en/players/bc7dc64d/Bukayo-Saka?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Bukayo Saka attack. Against Liverpool he was trapped on defense, unable to get forward, and against Tottenham, we just sucked in general.

But against Leicester City, he was phenomenal, and that was coming after his goal against Wolverhampton saved what was otherwise a pretty poor performance. All in the wake of his new contract.

Bukayo Saka didn’t play against Manchester City, which means he’s going to play here, and no matter where he plays, either as a wingback or a winger, he is going to have the freedom to get forward against a Villa side that is not going to hem him in as Liverpool did.

That always means good things. Even when Saka is bad (Wolverhampton) the threat is always there that he will recoup his effort with a goal or assist. More of that against Aston Villa is on the way.

Next stop, No. 3.

3. Kieran Tierney

I don’t know if <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-5-key-players/"https://fbref.com/en/players/fce2302c/Kieran-Tierney?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kieran Tierney will play and, if he does, I have no idea where he’ll play, since <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-5-key-players/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d934d1e6/Mikel-Arteta?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mikel Arteta is proving very flexible in his usage of Kieran Tierney, while Tierney is proving very flexible in his ability to do anything and everything asked of him.

Still, chances are that Tierney will play. He always plays. There’s no reason to bench the guy who is currently your best player, especially with the end of the season just around the corner. My thought is that when Tierney needs a “break,” he just moves in to play centerback, where he doesn’t have to cover as much ground.

Wherever Tierney is playing, he is a key man. Just look at what happened against City. As a centerback he was able to defend with the composure of an actual centerback and still find the creativity and vision to secure an assist like he was in his regular position at wingback.

No matter what is asked of Tierney, he is going to deliver, and that makes him pretty much a permanent key man.

No. 2 is next.

2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

I’m still not even sure <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-5-key-players/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d5dd5f1f/Pierre-Emerick-Aubameyang?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will start in this match, but let’s just assume that he’s going to, because someone has to be in there to score goals and because I do think, deep down, that Mikel Arteta wants to give Aubameyang every chance to win the golden boot that he possibly can.

With two pristine goals against Manchester City, Aubameyang will be looking to get back to scoring in the Premier League, especially seeing as how he was left out against Liverpool.

Aston Villa is the perfect subject for him. They may not allow him the space to run in behind, as I do believe we’ll be controlling the flow of the match and keeping Villa hemmed in, but that has never stopped Aubameyang in the past.

The opportunities will come and it will be up to Aubameyang to keep his quest for the golden boot alive. He’s three back from <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-5-key-players/"https://fbref.com/en/players/45963054/Jamie-Vardy?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jamie Vardy and you can be sure that he’s aware of that.

On to No. 1.

1. Granit Xhaka

There are a lot of questions being asked about this Arsenal midfield, and part of the problem is just a lack of options. Between two positions, Mikel Arteta has three guys to choose from. But no matter what, he always counts on Xhaka.

googletag.enableServices();
googletag.display("minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet");
});

This is a match where we can expect to see a lot of possession. That is always the kind of match where Xhaka takes on a bigger role simply because he is usually the guy distributing that possession. He is the guy who will be scoping out a shelled Villa defense, looking to crack it open with a pass.

Plus, with Villa looking to strike on counterattacks, it’ll be doubly important that Xhaka isn’t just sharp in possession, but sharp in covering his defensive tracks as well. Against City and Liverpool, he was hunkered in defensively and did his job well. He’s an underrated defender as always, but against Aston Villa, it will be about defending in space, not being pinned.

That changes the game for Xhaka. He can do it, no doubt. But once it’s actually in motion, it will feel a hell of a lot better.
<!—pageview_candidate—>
">
