A story gathering momentum quickly on Thursday is the news of Arsenal contacting currently out of work former Lille director of football Luis Campos over the possibility of taking up a role in north London.
The Portuguese has been out of work since December 2020 having left his role in northern France over a change of ownership. That wasn’t without leaving his mark, however, as he facilitated some exceptional transfer dealings at Lille, helping launch the careers of some previously unknown stars.
A prime example would be Nicolas Pepe, who two years on from signing from Angers for £16m was sold to none other than Arsenal for a club-record £72m. Every player sold by Les Dogues was done so with a replacement in mind and the most recent batch of acquisitions have helped steer the club to a first Ligue 1 title in a decade.
Prior to that he did similarly outstanding work at Monaco, with his career as a sporting director earning him status as a transfer guru.

Talks to assume a role at OGC Nice failed to come to fruition recently which surprisingly prompted Arsenal to get in touch with the 56-year-old. Technical director Edu has regularly spoken about his desire to work with a smaller team of defined roles, and with major squad upheaval in the works and the need for a stable team behind the scenes, the approach was an unexpected one.
However, football.london* have revealed that the discussions taking place are not with a view to removing Edu of his position – despite his involvement in a corruption scandal and some less than favourable transfer dealings thus far – and instead will be in an informal basis. There is competition from Real Madrid, however.
*the report has since changed to state Arsenal have distanced themselves from the claims but are actively seeking to extend their recruitment team, which is a very strange and sudden turnaround, hinting at a number of reasons.
Equally, he would not take up any sporting director role (as previously thought) and would instead ‘liaise with Arsenal’s recruitment team as the Gunners look to find their way back to the top in European football’. In other words, help them source the right targets.
Arsenal’s former head of international recruitment, Francis Cagigao, has yet to be adequately replaced and the recruitment side is also in the process of scouting out new scouts via the aid of a scouting headhunting company. Hardly the operational security desired to launch a full squad overhaul.
What does this move say about the club’s current summer activity? Are they in dire straits and in need of assistance?

<h2>Why Are Arsenal Looking to Hire Luis Campos?</h2>
<p>It doesn’t matter how strong your recruitment drive may be, someone of Campos’ calibre is always a welcome addition. This man has proven himself to be a master of the transfer market, unearthing superb talent that almost inevitably move on for a considerable profit.</p>
<p>Taking a look at Arsenal’s recent history, in which the majority of players are overpaid for and then <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/06/03/arsenal-plans-edu-campos-revealed/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/06/02/arsenal-total-debt-revealed-summer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">moved on for a loss</a> (or nothing), Campos’ expertise becomes a no-brainer. Given the aforementioned report has changed, it could be that other similar options are being sought after.</p>
<p>However, somewhat more cynically, Mikel Arteta and Edu submitted their transfer plans to the board before the season concluded, thus having their targets in place before the madness of the summer ensued. Are they already struggling to acquire who they’re after?</p>
<p>Such inexperience across the decision-making section in north London, no matter how stubborn, should always welcome help. Especially such highly respected aid.</p>
<p>There could be a case of the team behind the summer’s activity admitting they’re in over their heads; that the task at hand is too great for them to handle. Edu wants cohesive action in locating, securing, convincing and tying down targets to <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/06/03/arsenal-plans-edu-campos-revealed/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/04/26/arsenal-star-contract-negotiations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">contractually beneficial</a> deals, the latter two of those points being boosted by <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/06/03/arsenal-plans-edu-campos-revealed/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/14/arsenal-appoint-director-football/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Richard Garlick’s arrival</a>.</p>
<p>But if the desired targets are slipping from their grasp, or if there is uncertainty anywhere, then it makes sense for Campos’ arrival to offer his insight. Whatever the case may be, bringing Campos in, even in an informal role, is valuable experience and knowledge this rookie team sorely needs.</p>
<p>If they’ve come to the conclusion they can’t run this operation efficiently on their own, then at least they’ve understood the need for assistance early into the window. Before it has actually opened, in fact.</p>

</div>
<p>Campos may seek to work elsewhere, he does have most of Europe on red alert, but if this can be settled in the Gunners’ favour in the ‘coming weeks’, then it’s a considerable boost to everything the club hopes to achieve this summer, and beyond.</p><!—pageview_candidate—>">
