On the mission to secure midfielders this summer Arsenal have been linked with only a few despite their obvious needs, with full-backs and centre-forwards being majorly mentioned. Over at Sheffield United Sander Berge is one of the few, with reports stating the Gunners are making their move.
Relegated clubs are always easy pickings for Premier League sides. Despite the parachute payments from dropping down into the second tier, selling some of your prized assets is commonplace to help reshape the look of the squad for an immediate promotion push.
Norwich, for example, did brilliantly in keeping hold of their main stars last summer and have been rewarded with a richly deserved route back into the top-flight. Over at Sheffield United the story isn’t quite as luxurious, with precious few of their awful side this season worth poaching.
Sander Berge is one of those slim pickings. The Blades signing him for £22m from Genk 18 months ago was a major coup on their part, with Liverpool as well as other top European sides snooping around for the Norwegian. This season has been dire in every respect for Berge, who was out for four months after hamstring surgery this year and hasn’t been involved in a single victory in any of his 16 outings this term.
Arsenal interest in Sander Berge risks dangerous transfer territory as Mikel Arteta’s side could get drawn into overpaying in summer window
He will be shifted on this summer with interest aplenty, albeit none as strong as that coming from north London.
Mikel Arteta desperately needs midfield reinforcements with Dani Ceballos departing for good, Joe Willock up for sale, Mohamed Elneny entering the final year of his contract, Granit Xhaka said to want out this summer and Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi to be sold. All those transpire and that leaves…..Thomas Partey.
As is customary, news of Berge’s transfer fee was leaked to the press at around £35m before gradually lessening as the weeks have passed, to the point where it was claimed he had a release clause of a measly £12m if the club were relegated.
How do you judge a player who has endured a season that would be best scratched from memory with months missed through injury and the rest spent ending up on the losing end? Scouting, that’s how.
What reason is there to trust the Arsenal scouting department when they sacked them all and are in the process of hiring scouts to scout more scouts? Of course, any interest in Berge is long-standing, and ideally meticulous, as one report states that the Gunners have made their first bid.

<h2>Arsenal Have Sander Berge Bid Rejected by Sheffield United</h2>
<p>Hardly the most reliable source in the world, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/18/arsenal-offer-sander-berge-transfer/"https://www.jeunesfooteux.com/Arsenal-Mercato-offre-pour-Sander-Berge_a46572.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeunes Footeux</a> claim Arsenal have ‘made a first offer slightly below €20m’ for the Norwegian, but that falls short of Sheffield United’s demands for closer to €30m.</p>
<p>Temporary boss Paul Heckingbottom has since <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/18/arsenal-offer-sander-berge-transfer/"https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/sport/football/news/paul-heckingbottom-reveals-truth-behind-20618128" target="_blank" rel="noopener">labelled any bids</a> as ‘paper talk’.</p>
<p>The above report turns to clock back to early mentions of price and has to be taking with a fistful of salt, but there is no denying Arsenal’s keenness for Berge – it’s been widely reported. Stripping back the disappointment of this season, the 23-year-old is an exciting ball-carrying central midfielder with a pleasant balance to his style.</p>
<p>Despite his less than favourable surroundings over the past year and a half, in the previous 365 days he <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/18/arsenal-offer-sander-berge-transfer/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d0b6129f/scout/365_euro/Sander-Berge-Scouting-Report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">still ranks in the 81st percentile</a> for dribbles completed compared to fellow midfielders across Europe’s top five divisions; while blocks, clearances and aerial duels average out at the 72nd percentile. Sitting in front of the backline but with freedom to progress the play, this is neatly shown with a top 92% standing for passes intercepted and 93% ranking for dribbles leading to a shot.</p>

<p>Naturally, many other areas of his game have been severely hit by the Blades’ plight in the past 12 months. This season they’ve scored a staggering 42 fewer goals than last term.</p>
<p>A player with height, physical stature, a graceful elegance on the ball when in motion and keen defensive awareness, he’d suit most squads in the <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/18/arsenal-offer-sander-berge-transfer/"https://www.90min.com/leagues/premier-league" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Premier League</a>.</p>
<p>While talk of €20m being bid needs tempering entirely, the prices above these are the sorts of figures Arsenal should be shying away from. Such sums need parting with on a higher grade of talent, with more comforting spells behind them. Berge is not suddenly going to turn Arsenal into top four contenders.</p>
<p>If they start getting drawn into desperation and upping their offer for someone off the back of a wretched campaign for fitness and form when their budget is tight, they’ll enter dangerous territory.</p>
<p>Berge would add depth and a neat skillset into that area of the pitch – he wouldn’t add goals with just nine in 185 career appearances – but not for what Sheffield United are asking. This is a player who, if for the mooted £12m became available, should be snapped at. He has undoubted ability and space to develop.</p>
