While Arsenal’s 2021/22 campaign ended in disappointment, the signs of progress from Mikel Arteta’s young Gunners were too distinct to overlook.
Despite the criticisms of many, the club’s business last summer, in which they signed Aaron Ramsdale, Benjamin White and Takehiro Tomiyasu, undoubtedly hastened the club’s arduous rebuilding process.
Following back-to-back eighth-place finishes in the Premier League, Arsenal rose to fifth last season and were in a prime position to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since Arsene Wenger left town.
Immaturity, inexperience, injuries and Antonio Conte cost them in the end, and their stuttering end to the campaign highlighted the need for a big summer in the red half of north London.
Arteta has shown that he has a system in place which is capable of returning Arsenal to the promised land, but qualitative improvements at several key positions are necessary if the Gunners are to evolve into a scintillating but, more crucially, consistent beast under the promising Spanish boss.
With their competitors, including the eternal rivals down the road, poised to get stronger this summer, it’s pivotal that Teta’s young Gunners aren’t left behind. They’ve got to go big, too.
4 positions Arsenal must strengthen during the summer transfer window
In this piece we’ll detail the four positions Arsenal must strengthen this summer and, at a later date, we’ll provide a list of targets at each position.
1. Full-back

The Gunners tried their utmost to bolster both of their full-back positions last summer as Nuno Tavares was signed from Benfica to provide cover for Kieran Tierney, while Takehiro Tomiyasu was drafted in from Bologna to perform a specialist tactical function for Arteta.
Arsenal played their best football with both Tierney and Tomiyasu in the XI, but injuries meant that the pair were only able to start a combined 42 matches in the Premier League last season. Tavares and Cedric Soares were, regretfully, similarly prominent.
While Nuno showed promise as an exuberant attacking full-back, his sheer rawness and defensive naivety meant he was pretty unreliable. Cedric, meanwhile, is pretty sub-par in all phases and a far cry from the rugged genius of Tomiyasu.
Thus, there’s no doubting that Arsenal need reinforcements at full-back this summer, but it’s hard to envisage the club signing both a left-back and right-back. A player capable of performing both roles would be ideal, but such profiles are incredibly rare.

<p>Thomas Partey’s inability to stay fit means Arsenal could do with signing another defensive midfield option this summer, but the Gunners must address their left central midfield spot first.</p>
<p>Granit Xhaka enjoyed what was arguably his best season for the club last time out and that may raise one or two questions over the need to bolster this position. Well, first of all, Xhaka’s future is up in the air and, secondly, the Swiss performed close to his apex in 2021/22. It’s hard to see him improving upon what we saw last season.</p>
<p>Thus, for Arsenal to reach that next level, whatever that might be, an upgrade on Xhaka is required.</p>
<p>The Gunners need a smooth operator from the left half-space. A technically proficient midfielder who’s comfortable functioning in tight spaces and is capable of rotating positions to ensure that Arteta’s system works at its full capacity. Xhaka, considering his relative lack of athleticism, interchanged well with teammates last season as Arteta’s left-hand side rotations often confused opposing defences.</p>
<p>Ideally, the desired target will have the legs to provide cover in defensive transition, too. You can’t leave Partey on an island.</p>

<p>In Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, Arsenal are blessed with two of Europe’s most exciting young wide players. While Martinelli is relentless and in your face, there’s an unerring serenity surrounding Saka when he receives possession. He’s a baby-faced assassin.</p>
<p>These two are more than capable of leading the club’s rebuild, they’re that good, but competition is healthy, right? <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/01/4-positions-arsenal-must-strengthen-summer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/05/31/5-potential-suitors-for-arsenal-forward-nicolas-pepe/">Nicolas Pepe will surely leave north London this summer</a> which leaves Saka – unless Reiss Nelson stays – as the club’s only senior right-winger.</p>
<p>Martinelli, however, can play off the right, and we could see the Brazilian challenging Saka for a starting berth if the Gunners are successful in pursuing one of the several left-wingers they’ve been linked with so far.</p>
<p>The club could do with signing a high-output wide man if their <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/01/4-positions-arsenal-must-strengthen-summer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/05/30/arsenal-planning-move-forward-gabriel-jesus-eddie-nketiah/">reported striker plan proves to be true</a>.</p>

<p>We get it, everybody wants a striker.</p>
<p>Since Arteta took charge of the club in December 2019, he has had six windows to bolster his squad. Remarkably, the Spaniard is yet to sign a striker. But, that’ll surely change this summer.</p>
<p>The manager opted against bringing in a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang replacement in January which <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/01/4-positions-arsenal-must-strengthen-summer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/05/17/arsenal-quiet-january-champions-league/">proved costly in the short-term</a>, but Arteta now has the chance to land one of his preferred options that’ll stabilise the Gunners in the long run.</p>
<p><a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/01/4-positions-arsenal-must-strengthen-summer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/05/26/3-positives-of-eddie-nketiahs-arsenal-contract-extension/">Eddie Nketiah’s new deal</a> means Arsenal are reportedly set to bring in just one number nine this summer, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the club move for a pair of new forwards. A multitude of big names have been linked with a move to the Emirates, but each of the linked deals will be tricky to pull off.</p>

<p>Either way, expect a transformative arrival to sign for the club this summer. This is surely the most pressing need.</p><!—pageview_candidate—>">
