Arsenal are persistent, you’ve got to give them that. Despite being told they’ll have to pay a premium and that the player hasn’t been fully convinced of the project, the boat is being pushed out. They need a striker.
Dusan Vlahovic is a wanted man. Nowhere is he more wanted than at Arsenal.
It started with Arsene Wenger’s interest back in 2016 when the striker was at Partizan Belgrade, reemerged again around ten months ago during Mikel Arteta’s reign, and has caught fire now. Arsenal are determined.
Netting 23 goals in 28 senior appearances for Fiorentina and Serbia this season, the 21-year-old’s elite ball striking technique has contributed to his outstanding scoring rates. Throw in pure physical authority, excellent close control and variation to his movement and there is so much to like.
Dusan Vlahovic: 3 reasons Arsenal shouldn’t sign Fiorentina striker in January transfer window as Mikel Arteta remains determined to push through signing
Vlahovic can run the channels with deceptive pace, drop off to connect play with neat one-touch actions or hold up and then get on his bike to follow up in the box. It’s no wonder Europe is on red alert, especially since his numbers have come in a bang average Fiorentina side who’ve only recently started to pick up some form.
But he’ll be expensive. Very expensive.
The deal as we know it will cost around £58m in transfer fees, £160k-per-week wages (£300k before tax), and an extortionate £15m in agent fees. Arsenal are determined to land their man regardless of how difficult, or lavish, the operation will be.
Are there any red flags being raised here? He may be a special talent, but there are causes for concern that probably should deter the club from making this move.
They proved everyone wrong in the summer though, so shouldn’t we trust them? It’s just hard to look past certain aspects. And even if they don’t definitively rule out the signing, they are factors that must be considered.
Call it playing devil’s advocate

1. Vlahovic Deal Sets Dangerous Precedent
No part of the deal stands out more than the hideous size of the fees that will go straight into the pockets of the agent, Davide Torchia, and his camp.
Boasting a selection of clients from Serbia, Vlahovic’s agent has hit the jackpot. He’s in dreamland. He has a player on his books who could pocket him more than he’ll make in years in one fell swoop.
He’s getting greedy. He sees green and his name up in lights. This deal has now been handed over to the player and his representative and the amount Torchia is able to dictate has entered into farcical territory. Wanting a full £15m to sign the 21-year-old off, if Arsenal are to agree to such demands then they’re setting a dangerous precedent moving forward.
Next time they want to sign a player, perhaps even the midfielder they want in this window, other agents will see what Torchia managed to profit from the transfer and feel there is no reason why they shouldn’t be earning big bucks.
There are agents who are a disease in football and what may be £15m right now could spiral into something else further down the line. It’s a huge shame, since this has nothing to do with Vlahovic, but it raises multiple alarm bells and has a strong whiff of desperation about it.

<h2>2. Vlahovic Doesn’t Want to Join Arsenal – Don’t Force Him</h2>
<p>At this stage Fiorentina have handed control over to Torchia and Vlahovic to get this deal done. The Italian side know that they won’t be able to command this amount of money again and the offer in place from Arsenal matches their demands.</p>
<p>But there is a sticking point, one that has remained prevalent throughout: Vlahovic is yet to be entirely convinced of the move.</p>
<p>20 months ago, so just shortly after taking over the reins, Arteta sat down <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/01/11/vlahovic-3-reasons-arsenal-transfer/"https://twitter.com/adidasUK/status/1257701315679043588" target="_blank" rel="noopener">with Ian Wright </a>and said this:</p>
<blockquote><p>“The moment we mention Arsenal, Ian you know what it means around the world,” he told the Arsenal legend. “Everybody wants to come here and we have a really clear idea of what we are.</p>
<p>“It doesn’t need much convincing and if they do, for me it’s not a good starting point. If I have to convince a player to stay or to join us. To Arsenal? It holds me back a little bit.</p>
<p>“It has to be ‘what do we have to do? I want to play for that club and represent exactly the values the style of play that I want’. That’s the kind of emotion I want to hear at the start.”</p></blockquote>
<p>The manager was very clear: if I have to go out of my way to convince you to join the club then I should be concerned.</p>
<p>Now, of course, this was in May 2020. Arsenal have finished in eighth position two seasons running and aren’t competing in Europe for the first time in 25 years. There is a fair share of understanding from Vlahovic’s point of view that he has concerns over playing Champions League football and competing for honours. In terms of being convinced of a ‘project’, however, there are few clubs with such ambitious goals as Arsenal’s with the strategy they have in place.</p>
<p>Join in the winter and be the man to propel them into the Champions League.</p>
<p>But none of it matters if he doesn’t want to come. It’s not about him being right or wrong, it’s about him being invested.</p>
<p>Arsenal have worked hard to form a group who want to play for the club. If he’s not on the same page then he should be left to finish his own book.</p>

<h2>3. Vlahovic’s Scoring Rate Isn’t Sustainable in Premier League</h2>
<p>Now for the technical side of matters.</p>
<p>In the 2020/21 campaign Vlahovic scored 11 goals from open play in Serie A, with an xG accumulation of 11.63 (<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/01/11/vlahovic-3-reasons-arsenal-transfer/"https://understat.com/player/7084" target="_blank" rel="noopener">understat</a>), meaning he near enough matched his expected goals level. In the 2021/22 campaign, Vlahovic has netted ten goals from open play already, this time with an xG accumulation of 5.47, meaning he is outscoring his expected goals by a full 4.53.</p>
<p>The put it one way, he’s scored 4.53 more goals than he should have. Across this season and last season, he’s also netted 11 penalties.</p>
<p>This rate of scoring is rarely sustainable, and that’s before factoring in the transition from Serie A to <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/01/11/vlahovic-3-reasons-arsenal-transfer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/01/07/arsenal-ahead-dusan-vlahovic-transfer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Premier League</a>. Looking across the division’s history, one could argue that the most successful side to have plucked players from Italy is, in fact, Arsenal.</p>
<p>Vieira, Henry and Bergkamp spring to mind, although only the latter played any meaningful minute there for it to even count.</p>
<p>It has been a while, however, for any club, since a player has made the move from Italy and been a roaring success. The speed of the Premier League differs greatly from other top leagues and while Vlahovic certainly has the physical capabilities to impose himself in England, conjecturally the differences from playing in an average Fiorentina side who opposition sides fear less compared to an Arsenal team gunning for top four raises some concerns.</p>
<p>Who was the last striker from Italy to come to the Premier League and hit the ground running for any extended period of time? And which one of them arrived with such a hefty price tag on their shoulders? Using xG alone rings a few alarm bells, and using recent history to find similar examples of fruitful crossovers in divisions rings a couple of gongs on top.</p>

</div>
<p><strong>Verdict:</strong> Noting is certain with this, it’s worth adding. This is the game of devil’s advocate.</p>
<p>However, the agents fees, lacking willingness from the player and unsustainable metrics see a few red flags lifted. None of this detracts from the players’ ability, and he is a powerful beast of a striker with immense ball striking capability who only turns 22 years old in January. That’s scary.</p>
<p>Something about this move just feels off.</p><!—pageview_candidate—>">
