#3 Scores the decisive penalty to win a 10th FA Cup for Arsenal
The 120 minutes of football that preceded it may have belied the abundance of talent on the pitch, but the 2005 FA Cup final nevertheless produced plenty of drama in the penalty shootout and, once again, it was Patrick Vieira who stepped up and delivered when it mattered most.
Jens Lehmann’s excellent save to deny Paul Scholes had been the only blemish on an otherwise spotless scorecard between the sides and responsibility soon fell to Vieira to convert the winning spot-kick. After a deep breath and short run-up, our number four fired past Roy Carroll and was promptly embraced by his jubilant teammates before he later lifted the cup into the damp, afternoon sky at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
While no one knew at the time that it would be his final contribution in an Arsenal shirt, the joy of silverware was a fitting way to bring the curtain down and it allowed him to leave the Gunners on a high.

In contrast to the scenes of celebration that accompanied title glory in 2002, the campaign’s conclusion was also tinged with sadness as we bade farewell to ‘Mr. Arsenal’ Tony Adams after 19 wonderful years at the club.

This departure meant the Gunners were on the lookout for their first new captain in 14 years and, conscious of the big boots to be filled, Wenger entrusted the role to his compatriot. Vieira became the first player from beyond the British Isles to take the Arsenal armband and he proved his suitability for the role with outstanding displays of courage and leadership whenever he took to the field.

The French international himself once described receiving the honour as the “proudest moment” of his career and, as a former World and European champion with over a dozen domestic prizes to his name, that is certainly not something said lightly.

Many exceptional moments have caused Vieira to be revered as one of football’s greatest performers, but perhaps none are quite as remarkable as his part in inspiring Arsenal to complete an entire league campaign undefeated.

The Gunners faced several stern tests that threatened their indomitable streak in 2003/04 – such as Ruud van Nistelrooy’s astonishing late penalty miss at the Theatre of Dreams and a controversial tumble by Robert Pires to snatch an equaliser from the spot against Portsmouth – while incredible character was required to maintain ‘Invincible’ focus in the final weeks when the title race had already been decided.

But when the going got tough, Arsenal kept going and they even survived a scare in the last match to immortalise themselves in English football history, with the skipper stylishly quelling the Leicester challenge with a cool finish midway through the second half.

Vieira embodied the collective mixture of elegance and steel that fuelled his team’s journey to the domestic summit, and his extraordinary commitment to the Arsenal cause rightly earned him induction into the Premier League Hall of Fame earlier this year.
