Arsenal v Manchester United: Player Ratings

Made what many will point to as his second big mistake in as many games in letting Herrera’s volley in, and while I defended him for Gomis’ goal at the Emirates, he didn’t get down quick enough today and it cost Arsenal.

Struggled in the first half but adjusted well and grew into the match in the second. Displayed absolutely blinding pace to stamp out a two-on-one before being withdrawn in favor of Theo Walcott.  

Had a good match and marshaled the defense very well, catching United attackers offside on numerous occasions.

Solid performance again from the Frenchman and his anticipation was on full display as he left his spot on the back line to poke potentially incisive passes away before being controlled by their target.

Had an excellent first fifteen minutes, but was at fault for Manchester United’s first goal. Was marking Mata who drew him away from the back post and onto Fellaini who had an inferior position against Koscielny, allowing Herrera an uncontested volley.

MAN OF THE MATCH- Completed 97% of his passes and made six interceptions. Battled well with Fellaini all match before switching over to the right back position for the removed Bellerin. A Coquelin-Walcott right flank isn’t exactly secure, but they got the job done for the closing minutes.

Rough day for the little Spaniard as his recent downturn in form continues. Was pressed hard by United in the midfield which relegated him to doing most of his work in Arsenal territory. Suffered from lack of space more than he should have.

Displayed a lack of creativity in a couple instances, but the killing of attacking momentum I talked about against Swansea was largely resolved. The Welshman was a big part of firing Arsenal counters and helped rip open some space in the United half.

Never looked like scoring save for a skyward effort off his left foot. Made some mistakes reminiscent of his early days at Arsenal where he held onto the ball far too long in a dangerous area.

Only 77% pass completion rate, but created three chances and had four successful take-ons. Has moved into “even when he’s bad, he’s really pretty good” territory for Arsenal. Displayed wonderful strength in battling on the flanks to retain possession.

Scuttled one great chance thanks to Phil Jones’ head, and had another taken off his toe after bringing it down beautifully. His best opportunity was a close range effort after a magnificent touch to set it up, but the shot was weak.

Came on, did some shouting and running, passed the ball to United.

Continued showing why he is important to this squad. Ability to trigger sweeping moves with a clever touch and explosion of pace is vital for a substitute. That being said, if he gets the start midweek (and I think he should) pay attention to how he responds to more game time.

Didn’t do a great deal, but what he did was enough to secure a point. The difference in Arsenal’s style is apparent as soon as he comes on. As a natural winger, Theo Walcott keeps his width very well as evidenced by the run up to the Blackett own goal. If he can isolate a defender, the defender is as good as beat. Keep your eyes peeled on that one.
