Arsenal came into their home match up against Everton riding a huge wave of momentum. The Gunners had just disposed of Manchester United and Watford, both by a score of 3-0. As an encore, Arsenal ran Bayern Munich out town to the tune of 2-0. Needless to say, the spirit of the team may have covered any lingering exhaustion.
Everton did their best to match their hosts and for the most part, they did. The possession was not heavily in Arsenal’s favor, just 56%. The Toffees had plenty of opportunities to run the game even. Unfortunately for them, they were up against Petr Cech, who does not look too fondly upon opposing opportunities.
Alexis Sanchez was one such player afflicted with lingering exhaustion. Strangely enough, it did not look nearly as apparent as it did against Bayern Munich. He was still rampaging all over the pitch. While no goal came to him, he did have several attempts at continuing his ridiculous streak.
But it was not Alexis who would continue his streak. Instead, it was Olivier Giroud, making it five goals in his last four games. He has also scored five in his last five against Everton. His goal kept his 1.00 goals per 90 minutes on track.
In typical Arsenal fashion, the goals came in a burst. While the game was stalemated for over a half hour, by the 38th minute, it was soundly 2-0.
Everton would pull one back through Ross Barkley, who benefited from a very fortuitous deflection off of Gabriel Paulista’s right foot. However, despite the late surge, Everton was not able to overcome Petr Cech and a very sound Arsenal defense.
This was a very educational game for Arsenal. A lot of players taught us one thing or another. With that in mind, let’s get educated with the five things learned from the Everton win.

One of the main problems with Francis Coquelin when he first came back to Arsenal was his disciplinary record. The French enforcer picked up yellow cards every single game and it left him in a pickle. He had no control to turn it down and it would often come back to bite Arsenal, as his intensity would be shot if he had a yellow to his name.

Over the course of last season, it improved. He went from a card every game to a card every fifth or so game. It was a drastic improvement. But he still was not able to play with the same effectiveness with a yellow card. But then again, who is?

Against Everton, Coquelin picked up a questionable yellow card very early. In the 25th minute, in fact. Immediately, the nerves set in. Arsenal without Francis Coquelin is feeble in the middle of the pitch. But not only did Francis Coquelin not pick up another yellow, but he remained effective.

Le Coq has learned how to turn it down a notch while still being able to lay down the law. That is incredibly settling to see.

What the Ox needs is some game time with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. The two cogs of Arsenal’s machine did not look on the same page as the Ox and it left the young Englishman fending for himself at times, which never works out well.

Aaron Ramsey is out for a month, so that will give the Ox at least a handful of matches to learn to work with two of the best players in football. He needs to learn that he does not have to do it all himself. Everyone benefits from having Ozil on the pitch, the Ox just has to learn to benefit from it too.

It may simply be a matter of age, however. Oxlade-Chamberlain frequently looked like he was trying to single-handedly pick apart a very stout Everton defense. That is not needed and it is not necessary.

Give him some time.

Call it crazy, but I really believe that Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista are all world class. We all already knew that Laurent Koscielny was. The Kosc is the boss. Enough said.

Per Mertesacker was not so long ago as well, and he looks like that younger version of himself again. Against Manchester United and Bayern Munich he put away two of the hottest attacks Arsenal have faced in some time. The BFG kept Anthony Martial, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller out of goal.

To add merit to his doings, Bayern Munich and Robert Lewandowski continued right where they left off before Arsenal stepped in the way. They beat FC Koln 4-0, with Muller and Lewan both netting.

Gabriel Paulista still has to prove consistency, but he makes some outrageous tackles. It was a clutch tackle against Romelu Lukaku that gained him so much attention last year and he did the same thing again. The Brazilian is a special talent and he may even grow to be better than Laurent Koscielny.

With Petr Cech being the only signing of Arsenal’s summer, the pressure figured to be massive.
And no, I do not just mean on the pitch.

I will go into more detail on this in an upcoming article, but what we saw from Giroud was far from what is the norm for the Frenchman. He had lost his starting spot, found himself in unfamiliar territory and was being used as a glorified substitute.

Yet, give him a start, and Olivier Giroud will make you question why you ever sat him in the first place. At least, that’s what happened this time.

We know how Giroud can sometimes have confidence problems. Instead of getting down on himself, he came out onto the pitch ready to claim his rightful spot. His physicality and hold up play was impeccable. He has not looked this good since the second leg against Monaco last year. Giroud was doing everything. He was shooting from distance with accuracy, heading brilliantly and boxing out a physical Everton side.
