You can count on one hand the number of Arsenal players who’ve performed consistently well over the course of the season, which makes selecting some positions 2020/21 team of the season all the more difficult. Nonetheless, we’ll give it a go, shouldn’t be too hard.
Here we are with the Premier League season finished and with no European final to look forward to, with Mikel Arteta’s players, and probably himself, jetting off to warmer climates for some much-needed time off to escape an island perennially trapped in winter.
We all have our favourites, too. Certain players were backed through thick and thin while others had judgments made on them far too soon, an unfortunate human trait but sometimes an unavoidable one.
Arteta certainly had his own, a weakness of his that has become one of the main criticisms of his time in charge. Alleged favouritism for a select few who regularly let supporters and their teammates down. His selections for this lineup would make for interesting reading.

As for who was the best in their position, however, the conclusions drawn factor in performances from the players across the entire campaign, including displays domestically and in Europe. Some players barely featured but performed very well during their fleeting involvements, in which case sample size has to be factored in.
Interestingly, it will be curious to see how many of the following 11 players are still around in north London come the start of next season. There could, and should, be dramatic outgoings across the entirety of the summer, with the resulting arrivals ideally providing some stern competition for who features below.
Given how wildly inconsistent the vast majority of the squad have been barring a very small minority, a lot of the players had good halves to the season or only managed to contribute effectively in small patches.
All of which will be factored in as the Pain in the Arsenal 2020/21 Team of the Season is chosen. Bring on the debate.

Goalkeeper & Defenders
Bernd Leno (GK) – If we were taking it as an average, then Ryan would get the nod. Of course, playing just three matches, in which he didn’t put a foot wrong, is far too small of a sample size to warrant his choice. Leno was far from perfect but there was a point where he was being hailed as brushing with the world class bracket prior to his Wolves meltdown. A bit premature.
Calum Chambers (RB) – This is one of the toughest calls to make simply down to the precious few games Chambers actually played for Arsenal this season. Ten Premier League outings and six in the Europa League is so few in comparison to Bellerin’s 35 all in.
It also needs noting that earlier in the season Bellerin was playing well. He started strongly only for his form to nosedive to a point where he never recovered. Perhaps as a nod to Chambers’ mental strength in battling back from injury to claim the first choice right-back slot over an experienced signing and a club stalwart, he will be chosen. Also for his wicked deliveries.
David Luiz (RCB) – No defender played more minutes than Rob Holding this season, which also makes this selection slightly tough. It’s been widely recognised that Luiz has been the best of the options at Arsenal this season purely down to the unique skills on the ball he offers, which were what won him a spot in the team ahead of Holding around the midway mark of the season.
Holding has had good games and bad games. Luiz has had majorly good games. When trying to tip the scale one way or another, that seals it.
Gabriel (LCB) – The idea that Gabriel can’t play with Holding wasn’t unfounded, even if it has been dispelled to some degree over the final five Premier League fixtures of the season. For this position he has longevity over Pablo Mari but it’s his natural ability which wins him a place. Far from flawless, he has shown where development is needed while also demonstrating why Arsenal paid what they did. He’ll have a fine season next term. No doubt.
Kieran Tierney (LB) – Not really any point delving into this one but what we can say is that Arsenal are an inherently better team with the Scot in and nothing else will suffice.

</div>
</div>
<h2>Midfielders</h2>
<p><strong>Thomas Partey (CM) –</strong> From that first match against Rapid Vienna where within seconds he oozed his quality and stood head and shoulders above his teammates to present day, Partey has been a disappointment.</p>
<p>Injuries have played a huge role in that, so too the state of his arrival mid-pandemic and the <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/25/arsenal-2020-21-team-season/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/23/arsenal-brighton-bissouma-transfer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">quality around him</a>, but he will know as well as anyone that he hasn’t lived up to his billing. Improvements are needed. Yet, despite that, he is still legions ahead of the other options at the club. Next season will be his time to shine.</p>
<p><strong>Granit Xhaka (CM) –</strong> Remove the obvious two from the equation and there is a strong case for Xhaka being the Player of the Season at Arsenal. Erasing that pre-Christmas run (which we shouldn’t do) and he’s been one of the most consistent operators in the side.</p>
<p>He shouldn’t get the gong and it’s more a testament to the overall quality within the side that he’s in and around the top, but nobody can deny Arsenal are a better team without him in the engine room. Even his most staunch critics.</p>
<p><strong>Emile Smith Rowe (AM) – </strong>Without any shadow of a doubt. And what more testament to his transformative impact on Arsenal than some calls for him to even be chosen for Player of the Season? We all point to the role he’s had in the side since his inclusion against Chelsea, with Arsenal’s winning percentage with Smith Rowe starting in the 60’s with the same figure down at 30% without him.</p>
<p>He’s just brilliant. Nobody attacks space with the vision he has for the next phase and his runs with and without the ball are both instinctive and ingenious. Such a glorious talent.</p>

<h2>Forwards</h2>
<p><strong>Bukayo Saka (RW) –</strong> The star boy. <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/25/arsenal-2020-21-team-season/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/19/arsenal-trio-focus-future-season/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The future of Arsenal</a> and the club’s Player of the Season. That latter point is unconfirmed but it would be a shock to see him not scoop the award. Handed the No. 7 shirt at the start of the season, he’s been the shining light. The hope of a brighter future. The best player at the club this season.</p>
<p>Arteta’s constant use of him in every area of the pitch and total reliance on his technical security and drive exemplifies his importance to this team. Now it’s about building around him and ensuring Arsenal can match his talent. He deserves better.</p>
<p><strong>Alexandre Lacazette (ST) –</strong> The club’s top scorer in all competitions, need we say more? There was nothing overly new from Lacazette this season, although we did see two sides to him. The first half of the campaign was him dropping extremely deep, and while he maintained that trait into the second half, he added actual penalty box presence to it.</p>
<p>His link-up play was as excellent as ever, but he started to show more desire to attack deliveries and it resulted in that superb patch of form from Boxing Day onwards. Still not the prolific striker Arsenal need, he’s well worthy of his place in this team for what he contributed to performances as a whole, not just that he scored two more than Aubameyang.</p>
<p><strong>Nicolas Pepe (LW) –</strong> Would prefer him to be out on the right where he can cut in on his clinical left foot but there is plenty of scope for Saka and him to swap wings regularly if not permanently. Either way, Arsenal’s top contributor for combined goals and assists waltzes his way into his team off the back of some outstanding late season form.</p>
<p>Starting so show his true self since the turn of the year, it’s now about handing him more starts in the <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/05/25/arsenal-2020-21-team-season/"https://www.90min.com/leagues/premier-league" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Premier League</a> from <em>the start of the season</em>. Just 16 last term, his nine goals in the past 13 starts show where he has space to score even more.</p>
