Arsenal are still licking the wounds of a disappointing Carabao Cup exit as focus shifts to a crucial Premier League visit of Burnley on Sunday. Here is the match preview.
Having battled so hard to grind out a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Arsenal’s final hope of silverware this season was extinguished in comfortable fashion as Liverpool ran out deserved 2-0 winners.
Starting brightly on Thursday night, Alexandre Lacazette saw a free-kick hit the crossbar in what turned out to be the closest the hosts would come to scoring. While the opening goal could have been defended better, it was the clever build-up play from the Reds and a fine run from Jota that needed commending.
Fatigue set in early on as Mikel Arteta’s side began losing their control, and as the game opened up after the break the second Liverpool goal felt inevitable.

It would eventually fall to Jota once again, ending dreams of a Wembley date with Chelsea in February.
But there is no time to wallow in the defeat. It’s tough to take and sees Arsenal end January not in any cup competition for the first time since 1989/90. Equally, the Gunners now have three times as many red cards as they do goals in 2022. There are areas to be concerned about.
However, it’s all about rallying behind the team on Sunday. The quest for the top four continues and with it being the only competition left there can be no excuses if silly points are dropped in matches where the club are expected to win.
And there is no shirking that this is a game Arsenal should be coming away from with three points. They may have played fewer games than those around them, but Burnley sit bottom of the division and have struggled for any form across the whole season. Losing their main striker to Newcastle has knocked them for six and they have just the solitary victory all season.
The only way to forget about Thursday is to put in a solid performance on Sunday and maintain the charge for top four football. The show must go on.

<h2>Arsenal Team News vs Burnley – No Thomas Partey or Granit Xhaka</h2>
<p>Where to start?</p>
<p>It was plainly obvious that a number of Arsenal players were sorely lacking match fitness against Liverpool. Takehiro Tomiyasu was way off the pace and Emile Smith Rowe hadn’t even had a single training session prior to the match as he recovered from injury.</p>
<p>Martin Odegaard returned to the team after contracting Covid, and while he too didn’t train he nonetheless sparkled on a dim night.</p>
<p>With numbers so thin across the board it looks like all the returning cast will have to feature again, unless, that is, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/01/21/arsenal-burnley-premier-league-preview/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/01/20/arsenal-making-noise-transfer-window/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">if new signings arrive</a>. Unfortunately, the window for registration is increasingly small and, quite simply, it doesn’t look like happening.</p>
<p>To compound the misery, Thomas Partey received a second yellow card and subsequent sending off that now rules him out of a game it seemed he’d never be back for in the first place. Over the moon with his early return, it’s back to Sambi Lokonga being the only midfielder available as Xhaka serves the final of his two-match suspension.</p>
<p>Elsewhere there will be checks on Bernd Leno, Calum Chambers and Cedric Soares, who all missed the Liverpool match with injury.</p>
<p>In the case of Burnley it’s impossible to know what to expect. They’ve now had five <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/01/21/arsenal-burnley-premier-league-preview/"https://www.90min.com/leagues/premier-league" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Premier League</a> matches postponed, including their midweek clash with Watford, due to Sean Dyche having only ten available players for that fixture.</p>
<p>Fingers are crossed they can even put a team out.</p>

<h2>Arsenal Predicted Lineup to Face Burnley – Odegaard in Midfield Again?</h2>
<p><strong>Arsenal:</strong> Ramsdale; Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Odegaard, Sambi, Smith Rowe; Saka, Lacazette, Martinelli</p>
<p><strong>Burnley:</strong> Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; McNeil, Westwood, Cork, Gudmundsson; Lennon, Rodriguez</p>
<h2>Arsenal vs Burnley Score Prediction</h2>
<p>In terms of the ideal match following the disappointment of a cup semi-final exit, hosting bottom of the table Burnley ranks highly.</p>
<p>The Clarets have played only twice this month and not since January 8, which while some may suggest could mean they’ll be extra fit, their non-stop Covid cases and injuries has seen multiple matches called off – which nobody is bothered about because it’s not Arsenal – and they’ll be lacking match sharpness.</p>
<p>Dyche’s side have not won in any of their ten away matches this season, scoring only eight goals and picking up a measly four points. Even with a considerable amount of matches in hand on those around them, there is no denying that they’re in a relegation dogfight and losing their top goalscorer is a hammer blow to them.</p>
<p>They’re trying to scramble a deal for Andy Carroll, which says enough about where they are.</p>
<p>Arsenal were also visibly dead on their feet against Liverpool. Partey’s red card was exceedingly frustrating as his return would have done wonders for squad fitness and rotation, with it now looking like the same team may have to play again.</p>
<p>Even with that in mind, it should be three points for Arsenal. It has to be.</p>
<p>And it will be.</p>
