3. Impact on summer strengthening
Arsenal need a number of options for next season, with midfield the priority area to upgrade, and they are shopping for top-level talent in Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo.
Neither will come cheap and with Granit Xhaka leaving, Arteta is going to want at least two bodies in the engine room to cope with increased expectations and the demands of Champions League football.
By securing Nelson, Arsenal have retained a homegrown player and ensured they don’t need to add a body on the left wing, giving them more money to spend on Arteta’s top midfield targets.
Questions will remain about the amount Nelson has been used, and whether Arsenal need a right winger to compete with Saka, but either way, this deal ensures Arsenal keep a very talented player whose wage is low enough that it won’t detract from incomings, but could allow Arteta to land his top targets.

<h2><strong>1. Wage and length</strong></h2>
<p>Nelson has reportedly agreed to a four-year deal, which will keep him at Arsenal until 2027, but the exact figure around his wage has yet to be released.</p>
<p>In April, the Daily Mail’s <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/05/26/reiss-nelson-new-contract-arsenal/3/"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11982633/Arsenal-offered-Reiss-Nelson-new-contract-extension-doubts-remain-wingers-future.html">Sami Mokbel</a> reported that Arsenal had offered Nelson £35,000 per week on a one-year deal, however, that was quickly rejected by the player and his camp.</p>
<p>Since then, talks switched to a longer-term deal, with Nelson keen to establish a sense of stability, rather than chasing a new deal in 12 months’ time and entering into another period of uncertainty.</p>
<p>With that in mind, it’s unlikely Arsenal have increased the weekly wage by much, or possibly at all, and have instead offered Nelson the extra three years, which not only gives him a sense of value but gives the club the option to sell at any point over the next three years.</p>

<h2><strong>2. The fightback</strong></h2>
<p>In August, Arsenal were keen to move Reiss Nelson on, but an injury prevented a move from materialising and he grabbed that opportunity with both hands.</p>
<p>From his substitute appearance against Nottingham Forest when he bagged a brace to his last minute against Bournemouth, Nelson has shown his value to Arsenal, and it has come about through hard work.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

He grabbed the opportunity with both hands and he’s earned that four year deal. <p>Anyone who watched him from a young age could see that he had the talent, but his self-admitted poor attitude and small frame hindered his development.</p>
<p>This season, we’ve seen a bulky, hardworking Nelson with those quick feet that we had such high hopes for make a real impact, and he will be determined to show that he is good enough to make it at the club and that those moments weren’t just flashes.</p>
