Arsenal finally witnessed the full debut of new signing Pablo Mari and it was exactly what you’d want. Here are three things, in particular, he did right.

After crashing and burning out of the Europa League, Arsenal came into Portsmouth looking… shaky. But amidst other storylines, one of the side plots was watching the full debut of Pablo Mari, who finally got out on to the pitch, in the starting XI, for Mikel Arteta.
There were rumors over the weekend that Mari had already been signed permanently for the £5m-ish fee that he was supposedly going to cost. All that coming before he even took a step on a competitive pitch was high praise enough, but seeing him against Portsmouth, I’d have forked up the money too. Easily.
Despite a wave of initial pressure, the Gunners were able to properly defend their goal, and Pablo Mari was a big reason why. The hosts took eight shots. Mari blocked four of them all on his own.
Of course, there wasn’t much more of a need for that when the second half rolled around because the Gunners took such total control over the match, but Mari did his part when called into action, and it became such a telling debut.
Here are the three things, in particular, he did absolutely right. We start with No. 3.
3. Distribution
It’s not enough to just defend anymore. There’s so much more to the overall effectiveness of a centerback, and with Mikel Arteta, we see which kinds of centerbacks he prefers. Guys like David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi have been skeptical defenders who have intelligent attacking instincts. They distribute well.
Sokratis is more the opposite. A better defender who isn’t the best on the ball. Arteta has favored Mustafi and Luiz.
Pablo Mari did so well on the ball, picking out his passes, breaking through lines of blue shirts, and not always just turning around and dumping it back to the keeper. He had ideas with the ball, and those ideas are going to serve him well.
On to No. 2.

2. Composure

I may have compared him to Mustafi and Luiz on the previous slide, but Pablo Mari showed initial signs of something Msutafi and Luiz have only recently grown into—composure. No matter what you do as a defender, if you don’t have composure, you make fans nervous, you make your teammates nervous, you make yourself nervous.

Sokratis makes me nervous, for instance. When he gets the ball, I feel the nerves. Not so much when he’s defending, because he’s good at that. For Mustafi or Luiz, it was the opposite. When they have the ball, I’m not nervous. It’s when they don’t have the ball that I am. Though that is changing, sure enough.

But for Mari, I never once felt nervous, whether he had the ball or not. He was just as cool as can be, and that is always the best, best sign for a new signing. Especially a signing making such a leap to go from Brazil to the Premier League.

Mari has the makings of a Premier League defender. I know, it was only Portsmouth. But composure translates. I’m sure he will have his slip-ups and nerves, but that composure will serve him well in the long-term.

Finally, the all-important No. 1.

1. Closing down

I would say the No. 1 thing I scream at Arsenal players to do is close down opposing players. Don’t let them settle in, find space, pick a pass or take a shot. That’s when dangerous things happen. All of our centerbacks have been guilty of it at one point or another, but for Pablo Mari, he started off just right.

In the first half alone, Mari blocked four shots. It seemed like every time Portsmouth got into his zone, he was glued to their attacker and the shot would deflect off his outer side and go safely out of play.

Deflections are nervous business sometimes, but these weren’t fluke deflections. These were brought about by superior positioning and being in the right spot. Which, in turn, came about by protecting his area, staying calm and composed, and not being shaken off by silly footwork.

There isn’t currently a defender on this Arsenal team that I have seen consistently close down effectively, so if Mari can check that off his list already, then we are in for a treat, my friends.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
