Forwards
Bukayo Saka (RW) – 5.5/10 – Gave Dan Burn something to think about early on, and the winger was once again fouled on numerous occasions. Saka, though, struggled to have a major influence – as has been the case since his hamstring injury.
Eddie Nketiah (ST) – 5/10 – Did okay when the ball arrived at his feet, but I would liked to have seen Nketiah test the Newcastle centre-backs in behind. His threat was pretty tame.
Gabriel Martinelli (LW) – 5/10 – The Brazilian was full of vigour, and the Gunners turned to him in the closing stages in hope of getting them into the match. However, Martinelli lost the battle with substitute Tino Livramento.
Substitutes
Oleksandr Zinchenko – 6/10
Leandro Trossard – 5/10
Fabio Vieira – 5/10

From there, it was a slog for Arsenal with Newcastle’s defence dropping deeper and their backline growing in resilience. Mikel Arteta attempted to change tack, but the visitors failed to fashion an opening in the minutes that remained as the Magpies consigned the Gunners to their first Premier League defeat of the campaign.

Goalkeeper & Defenders

David Raya (GK) – 5/10 – Wasn’t a particularly busy outing, but he certainly looked more comfortable with the ball. Questionable positioning for the goal.

Ben White (RB) – 4/10 – Rightly substituted following a display that was ridden with errors in possession. Does anyone know why he didn’t close down Joe Willock?

William Saliba (CB) – 8/10 – Saliba was excellent. There was only one sequence when he was pinned by Callum Wilson. The Frenchman was otherwise untroubled.

Gabriel (CB) – 6.5/10 – His work for Newcastle’s opener certainly wasn’t his best. Thought he was otherwise sturdy.

Takehiro Tomiyasu (LB) – 6.5/10 – Counter-pressed well when he dropped into midfield and largely kept Miguel Almiron in check before the Paraguayan’s withdrawal.

Midfielders

Jorginho (DM) – 6/10 – Is still completely lost when asked to defend the counter, but his performance was more than serviceable while Arsenal managed the contest in the first half.

Declan Rice (CM) – 7.5/10 – Rice’s influence diminished in the second half, but he was Arsenal’s standout performer in the opening period.

Kai Havertz (CM) – 6.5/10 – Was keen to impress, that’s for sure. Threw himself around St. James’ Park in a bid to disrupt the hosts. Some of his challenges were ill-advised, but this was arguably Havertz’s brightest Premier League performance in an Arsenal shirt.
