Is it all about to spring into action? Arsenal, without any additions to strengthen their starting lineup so far this window, are on the hunt for an attacking midfielder and James Maddison is a name that doesn’t look like going away.
Ben White will join from Brighton in a deal that could cost Arsenal up to £55m, a move that looks set to go down as the marquee addition of the window as Mikel Arteta plots a major summer overhaul.
Were James Maddison to arrive from Leicester, White’s crown may be taken off him as any agreement to lure the 24-year-old to north London would surely constitute an even more considerable outlay.
For those who like a gamble, this deal, whether successful or not, looks destined to go down to the wire.

Along with a central midfielder who can provide an immediate impact alongside Thomas Partey, the playmaker/No. 10 role has nearly equal importance. Emile Smith Rowe, who is heavily rumoured to be earning the actual No. 10 shirt vacated by Mesut Ozil, will be an Arsenal star for years to come.
Already making a huge impact on the team following his regular inclusion from Boxing Day onwards, there is careful monitoring of his progress needed due to his relative inexperience and age. More than capable enough of being a regular Premier League fixture, the goal isn’t to bench him every week in favour of a more established star – it’s to help him.
Currently carrying the creative mantle all on his own, it’s key to note how he thrived following Martin Odegaard’s arrival in January. It lifted his all-round game and saw him flourish as an inverted left-winger.
Even without European football he will need assistance in that department and Maddison continues to attract admiring glances from Arteta and the supporters. So much so that Arsenal are plotting a move this summer.
Adrian Kajumba of the Daily Mail, who has been very connected with the Gunners this summer, has outlined the course of action that Arsenal feel could persuade the Foxes to sell.
Firstly there is the fee – this has varied from source to source – which is undoubtedly going to extend beyond £50m. That figure is not thought to be enough to bring Leicester to the negotiating table (surely nobody thought it would) therefore Arsenal will try to supplement any deal with the addition of some fringe players in the squad.

<h2>Arsenal Could Offer Reiss Nelson and Maitland-Niles for James Maddison</h2>
<p>There are a fair few players in the Arsenal squad who classify as ‘fringe’. Far too many. Sadly, that doesn’t mean Leicester are going to want Willian or Sead Kolasinac any time soon. Those the Gunners are willing to offer will come as little surprise.</p>
<p>Hale End duo <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/07/21/arsenal-maddison-cash-player-transfer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/06/27/reiss-nelson-arsenal-transfer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reiss Nelson</a> and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are listed as players who could be included to sweeten the deal, both who could serve a purpose to Brendan Rodgers.</p>
<p>It’s stated that the Leicester boss is keen to bring in a wide forward this summer following the departure of Cengiz Ünder after his loan spell, and potentially due to Ayoze Perez not living up to his £30m price tag after joining two seasons ago.</p>
<p>Nelson, who has only one year left on his contract, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/07/21/arsenal-maddison-cash-player-transfer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/07/16/arsenal-nelson-transfer-development/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">is attracting plenty of interest</a> across the Premier League and in Bundesliga, but is yet to be linked with a King Power Stadium move.</p>
<p>From Arsenal’s point of view it’s a inclusion in the deal that suits them. Whether it satisfies what Rodgers is after is another matter.</p>
<p>Still unproven in the top-flight, for a team in the Europa League next season is Nelson going to be the calibre of player to lift the overall quality within their excellent squad? He might not overly appeal to them.</p>
<p>Maitland-Niles is someone the Foxes <em>have</em> been looking at previously and they explored signing him back in January when a loan move became available to Premier League clubs. Now well known that the 23-year-old shunned the advances of more established clubs in favour of playing in midfield for Sam Allardyce’s West Brom, it’s likely that Rodgers saw him as full-back cover instead.</p>
<p>Due to the financial demands needed to sign Maddison, surely both would need including along with the aforementioned £50m if this was to have any appeal to the midlands outfit. Even then it may be a push.</p>
<p>However, Arsenal are <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/07/21/arsenal-maddison-cash-player-transfer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/06/17/arsenal-confident-60m-maddison-transfer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confident</a> there is room to negotiate here.</p>

<h2>Arsenal Believe James Maddison Could be Available for Transfer</h2>
<p>People are rightly coming back to what happened last summer for reference in any potential deal for Maddison.</p>
<p>An unnamed Premier League club failed with a £70m bid 12 months ago. Normally, following that, further down the line that figure could be reduced with one year of his contract passing by and the possible openness of the player to leave.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for Arsenal, Maddison then went and signed a four-year deal with a £100k-per-week salary. If anything, the £70m fee will have gone up.</p>
<p>Given the interest in his signature, certain ‘gentleman’s agreements’ can be discussed that would allow Maddison to move with his club’s blessing should the Foxes receive the fee they’re after.</p>
<p>Some fleeting reports of the 24-year-old being open to the move have arisen, and money does talk, but how keen would he be on joining a club in transition with no European football? Despite the plethora of issues at Arsenal, however, they do seem to still have some ‘pull’.</p>
<p>But nothing will be agreed unless Leicester’s demands are met. Of course.</p>
<p>Though Kajumba adds that discussions would be very difficult, Arsenal believe there is a deal to be struck. Or at least room for negotiation.</p>
<p>With the new season starting in just three weeks, for the sake of both parties a quick transaction would be preferable. Youri Tielemans is attracting interest from Liverpool and Manchester United but the signs are that he will pen a new contract, in which case it could aid Arsenal’s case.</p>
<p>Even with the Belgian staying one would imagine a replacement for Maddison would be needed, which with £60m+ wouldn’t be all too difficult for the club given their excellent track record in the transfer market. They’ve already shown their nous with Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumaré this summer.</p>
<p>In any case, this won’t be an easy deal to pull off. Leicester don’t need the money, boast all the negotiating power and for Arsenal to gain an extra foot in they would need Maddison to push for this deal. There is no indication yet that he is doing so.</p>
