Arsenal maintained their unbeaten record this pre-season with a 3-1 win over Orlando City. Gabriel Martinelli, Eddie Nketiah, and Reiss Nelson were among the goals for the Gunners.
Another pre-season game and another game of two completely different halves. The first was marred by sloppy play and an inability to create anything meaningful aside from Martinelli’s deflected shot just five minutes in.
The home side were good value to head into the shed’s level at half-time. Mikel Arteta picked a second-string side, and it showed. There was little to no cohesion, and Orlando were the better side for the most part.

The second half was the polar opposite. With the introduction of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Thomas Partey, Gabriel, William Saliba, and Ben White, the Gunners took over the game.
A poacher’s finish from Nketiah gave Arsenal the lead before a well-taken strike from Nelson put the result beyond doubt.
3 talking points from Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Orlando City
The game provided plenty of talking points. Here they are.
1. Depth is Arsenal’s biggest issue
If the first halves against FC Nurnberg and Orlando, along with the second half against Everton, told us anything, it’s that the gap in quality between Arsenal’s first-team and the fringe players is enormous.
Against Orlando, Arsenal failed to get anything going offensively and were outplayed for big stretches of the half. The back four of Rob Holding, Pablo Mari, Nuno Tavares, and Cedric (unlucky to be included as he was not at fault for anything) were pulled apart and easily undone by simple long balls.
The midfield failed to create any real drive, and the front three – made up of Nketiah, Martinelli, and Nicolas Pepe – barely fired a shot, the Brazilian’s goal aside.
That will be the biggest worry for Mikel Arteta. His first team can match it with just about any team in the Premier League, but his squad players were outshone by MLS players (no disrespect intended).
While tremendous strides have been made in the first-team, it could be Arsenal’s back-ups that cost them a top-four shot.

<h2>2. Odegaard and Jesus link-up is exciting</h2>
<p>Many felt last season that the only thing lacking was a top-quality forward. Arsenal has that now in Gabriel Jesus, and what he can do for Martin Odegaard will be something to watch this season.<br>
The duo already seem to be on the same page as the Norwegian picked up neat little pockets of space and often found the Brazilian in the box.</p>

<p>Odegaard’s talent is going to be unlocked with Jesus in the team, and that is a scary thought. Jesus was always available for a pass, and more often than not, when Odegaard saw him, the pass was made.</p>
<p>The captain-to-be slid in a delightful pass for the Brazilian, who uncharacteristically took one too many touches and saw his once golden opportunity to score pass him by.</p>
<p>Going by what we have seen against Everton and<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/07/21/arsenal-3-1-orlando-city-talking-points-odegaard-dazzles/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/07/21/player-ratings/"> now Orlando</a>, the Odegaard and Jesus duo will be frightening. That is without mentioning Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, or Gabriel Martinelli.</p>

<h2>3. Fringe players fail…..again</h2>
<p>The likes of Pablo Mari, Nuno Tavares, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and Nicolas Pepe failed again. While that may seem harsh, these kinds of performances have manager Mikel Arteta looking for buyers for all of them.</p>
<p>The first half, like it was against FC Nurnberg and the second half against Everton, was a chance to put their best foot forward in front of Arteta. They didn’t do it.</p>

<p>Tavares was led a merry dance by Facundo Torres by simple balls over the top, Maitland-Niles was a tad sloppy in the middle of the park, and Nicolas Pepe, for all his tricks, failed to create anything meaningful.</p>
<p>Mari was at sea several times, and the thought of any of these players getting significant game time this season scares every Arsenal fan.</p>

<p>It is not a personal attack on the players mentioned, just what the eye test tells us. With Chelsea to come next before Sevilla at home, it is hard to envision any of these players seeing considerable game time.</p><!—pageview_candidate—>">
